We took the Durango - Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. This is the holy grail of vintage railroads. Built in 1881, the railroad has continually operated for 130+ years. Base cost is $78.00 round trip and takes nine hours. We road in an open air gondola car which for this time of year is very enjoyable. There are coaches that you can ride in, but keep in mind, they were built in 1880 and do not have air conditioning.
The track takes you along the Animas River gorge where at some points the train is only inches away from a 400 foot drop to the river. The vistas are fantastic.
A few tips: You can pack a lunch and bring it on board. Do not where white pants/shorts. This is a real coal burning engine and it spews cinders and coal dust. You may get dirty! The train climbs 3000 feet in 45 miles. It may be warm in Durango, but can be very cool in Silverton. It is advisable to bring a sweatshirt or jacket. Weather in Colorado can change in a moment. Be Prepared.
The railroad runs two trains a day from April to October and one train a day to the halfway point during the winter months.
Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad

W. I haven't been to South America, Africa or Asia, so chances are I haven't been to my favorite place yet. That said, out of the places that I have been my top five would have to be:

5. Rome

4. Paris

3. Belize

2. Kalalau Beach ca. 1975

1. Cinnamon Bay, St. Johns, U.S.V.I.

My criteria for a favorite place usually includes a beach and few people. Then how did Rome and Paris make the list?

W.
